I used to live near the Little Arabia of Chicago when I was a graduate student. Chicago’s winter was brutal and harsh. Life was not easy when things were stressful. I used to buy a tray of baklavas and a pack of Pepsi Cokes to cope with stress when I had to. I know it was a lot of sugar but that was also a lot of stress.
Baklava is a delicious, rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo dough filled with various nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey. It can be found in cuisines of Mediterranean, Caucasus, Levant, Balkans, Maghreb, and Central and West Asia. According to Wikipedia, the word “baklava” may find its root from the Mongolian language bayla which means ‘to pile up, wrap up, tie’ and the Turkic verbal ending –va.
I can care less about history. Since I moved to Portland three years ago, I had always been looking for that perfect Arabian sweet shop where people can have baklavas with a cup of fine Turkish coffee. I came to Karam Lebanese Deli & Catering for a business meeting. I asked for a piece of walnut baklava and a cup of premium Turkish coffee. Wow! I had been searching for this place for years and now I am here enjoying this moment. The baklava was even better than the ones I had in Chicago as they were prepared with homemade rose water syrup. I just can’t describe how happy I was at that moment. If I could have a can of Pepsi Coke, that would be much better. But I could deal with that.
